UN Week at CIS is an annual event, and has over the years become a firm CIS tradition. While many schools around the world celebrate in a similar fashion, we believe our celebrations are the best. However, UN week is not just about cultural performances from all corners of the globe, a food festival for IB risk-takers, and the celebration of our collective cultural pride through a Parade of Nations. It is something more.
UN week allows students to connect with their cultural heritage, an important connection for an expatriate child, or third culture kid, as it can enrich their own personal connection to their culture. UN week encourages open mindedness, an IB learner profile trait, as students cheer for their friends as they parade around the gym, or as they learn more about other cultures’ customs and traditions.
Engaging stories and excited conversations about our own cultures in the classroom and playground further enrich the week, helping learners to understand and appreciate not only their peers, but the broader world around them.
Throughout UN week, our students are actively demonstrating the IB philosophy and ethos of “creating a better and more peaceful world, through intercultural understanding and respect, where lifelong learners understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right”.
In a world fraught with political tensions, our goal is to respect everyone’s nationality and cultural choices. During UN week, we collectively demonstrate intercultural understanding, respect, open mindedness and tolerance; and our commitment to a world united in peace. When our students leave CIS, they will take action to share this commitment.
Together we are CIS.United.
